With variety of shapes, leaf colours & flowerheads, grasses have a very long season. Larger types can be used as focal points in borders whereas the smaller compact types are excellant at edging the front of the border. 
Varieties of Carex, Festuca & Holcus are some of the best low forms with stiking coloured foliage.
Taller varieties of interest would be Cordateria, Miscanthus & Stipa types. With late summer shows of large flower plumes.
Hardy Ferns With the diversity in foliage size & shape Ferns can provide good architectural interest even in the darkest corner of the garden.
