Heathers 
This group of plants is excellent for creating low maintenance borders. With each plant lasting many years they will only reach a couple of feet tall (with a few exceptions) & give plenty of flower year in year out.
Most heathers prefer a sunny, open postion, thriving in exposed gardens. They are also at home in containers & can almost be used as seasonal bedding. With great shows of flower in the winter months or brilliant coloured foliage they are a great alternative to traditional winter bedding plants & don't suffer with the weather.
Most heathers will need an acid soil to thrive, although a few types will tolerate a more alkaline soil. With this in mind and it's suitability to exposed sites,container gardening & low maintenance it's the ideal plant to become the base to rooftop garden schemes. With the soil having to be brought on site the acidity levels could be matched to make the most of this underated plant.
